Welcome to the website presenting artistic glass in architecture made by
Tomasz Urbanowicz in his own studio ARCHIGLASS, which he established together with
his wife, architect Beata Urbanowicz, in 1987 in Wroclaw.
Tomasz Urbanowicz is an architect, designer and a glass maker.
Fascinated by glass as a unusually beautiful material he casts it in kilns
using his own technologically complicated innovative methods into unique
usually large-sized and thick forms.
These glass compositions, conformed to the artists creative vision, are made on
demand to the definite places, always taking shifting light into consideration as
well as respecting the architects project and investors requirements.
Urbanowicz creates glass compositions mostly to the prestigious
public utility buildings and companies premises,
but also to residences and private houses
and sometimes as occasional glassworks.
Urbanowicz's artworks three times took part in World's Fairs EXPO, representing Poland:
on EXPO 2000 in Hanover (Germany) on
Lower Silesias presentation; on EXPO 2005
in Aichi (Japan) the composition The soul of the grand piano was the main artifact
in Polish Pavilion; and on EXPO 2008
in Saragossa (Spain), where the composition Poland - catching the wind into sails
was a part of national presentation.
Glass creations can be found mostly in Poland, but also in many places round the world:
the glass sphere The United World is a central artistic element on
European Parliaments agora in Strasburg
(France); the glass rainbow Larc en ciel
decorates G.Brassens College in Paris (France), green glass castings the lobby of
Holsten brewery in Hamburg (Germany);
and the composition Blue sunset in the ocean cruises around the world on the words
biggest liner Queen Mary 2.
The set of glass pieces The Glass Universe has been shown on many
Exhibitions in Poland and abroad in places
such as: gardens of the Polish Embassy in Prague (Czech Republic), on the Art Fairs
START or the European Parliament in Strasburg.
Tomasz Urbanowicz's artworks are published in professional literature: in many magazines
and books - recently in 'Colours of Architecture' by Andrew Moore, London, 2006 and in
'Contemporary Kiln-formed Glass' by Keith Cummings, London / Philadelphia 2009
